Tujuannya adalah, agar pemerintah kolonial Belanda kesulitan melawan pasukan kaum Padri dibawah pimpinan Tuanku Imam Bonjol dan pada saat itu pemerintah kolonial Belanda sedang menghadapi perang besar di Jawa yaitu Perang Diponegoro dari Kesultanan Mataram.
