Hamid : Minto, beruntung sekali kamu memiliki istri seperti dia. Tapi anehnya, engkau selalu kelihatan lesu.
Suminto : Bagaimana tidak lesu, gaji pegawai rendah seperti saya ini sangat tidak seimbang dengan harga-harga di pasar. Gaji yang saya terima sekarang cuma bisa untuk hidup sepuluh hari saja, yang dua puluh hari mesti harus ditutup dengan utang, kalau perlu menjual barang yang layak dijual. Kian lama utang itu bukan kian sedikit, Pak Hamid, tapi makin menggunung. Aku bekerja bukan hanya untuk aku dan istriku, atau biaya sekolah seorang anakku. Tapi, semata-mata untuk mereka yang mengutangkan kepada istriku.
Hamid : Aku sudah beberapa kali menganjurkan supaya berubah cara berpikirmu. Kamu harus melihat realitas, berpikir yang dialektik. Mestinya kau tidak perlu pesimis dengan gajimu yang tidak cukup. Dengan gaji yang tidak cukup itu, kamu harus bisa menggunakan kesempatan dalam segala cara, agar rumah tanggamu menjadi kuat.
Suminto : Lantas, apa aku harus korupsi untuk menutup kekurangan? Aku tidak bisa berbuat senista itu, Pak Hamid.
Hamid : Siapa yang menganjurkan kamu untuk korupsi? Aku tidak bilang begitu. Aku cuma menyarankan agar kamu berpikir dialektis, agar kamu dapat mengubah keadaan menjadi lebih baik. Tapi ... sudahlah, Minto, aku ke sini sebenarnya hanya mau pinjam raket badmintonmu.
